Why ZAPCA Was Established

(ZPCA) was established after recognizing serious gaps in mental health support across the health, education, and community sectors in Zanzibar. The increasing psychological challenges affecting individuals and lack of professional services led to the formation of ZPCA to address these needs.

Health Sector

Both patients and healthcare workers were experiencing high levels of stress, trauma, and emotional exhaustion. Many individuals dealing with chronic illnesses or loss lacked access to trained counselors who could support their emotional needs.

Medical personnel, often working in high-pressure environments, faced burnout without adequate psychological support. The absence of structured counseling services in health facilities made it clear that mental health was a neglected aspect of care.

Academic Sector

Students of all ages were struggling with anxiety, depression, bullying, and performance pressure. Teachers were not equipped to handle these psychological challenges, and schools lacked dedicated counselors or support systems.

The mental well-being of learners was being compromised, affecting academic performance and social development. This gap pointed to a systemic need for professional intervention.

Community Sector

Substance abuse, domestic violence, unemployment stress, and unresolved trauma were widespread. These issues contributed to family breakdowns, youth delinquency, and community instability.

Mental health stigma and limited public awareness made it difficult for individuals to seek help, creating a need for both education and professional counselling services.
